PLATFORM OF THE SWEETWATER COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY

ADOPTED IN MAY 2020

Article 1 Section 1 of the Wyoming State Constitution states:

“All power is inherent in the people, and all free governments are founded on their authority, and instituted for their peace, safety and happiness; for the advancement of these ends they have at all times an inalienable and indefeasible right to alter, reform or abolish the government in such manner as they may think proper.”

We concur and the Sweetwater County Democratic Party supports the widest possible empowerment and engagement of citizens in the political process and to the integrity and responsiveness of government to the people.

THIS PLATFORM REFLECTS THE CORE VALUES OF THE

SWEETWATER COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY

WE BELIEVE IN FULLY FUNDED EDUCATION

  • All people are the future of our community and nation. We therefore call upon our policy makers to fund education, fully and fairly, from early childhood through college and adult education.

  • Local control of K-12 education is essential. We believe the best education decisions are made at the local level.  This includes designing and implementing student testing.

  • With a fully funded education system being essential to Wyoming’s future, all funding should be derived from revenue sources that are not counter to Wyoming values and future.

WE BELIEVE IN GOVERNMENT TRANSPARENCY

  • We support the widest possible empowerment and engagement of residents in the political process and to the integrity and responsiveness of government to the people.

  • We support the separation of religious organizations and state.

  • We support transparency and accountability in government at all levels, including adherence to all public meeting and open meetings laws.

  • We support adherence to and enforcement of laws regulating ethics and conflicts of interest at all levels of government.

  • We support full lobbyist disclosure.

  • We support mail-in voting to ensure everyone’s participation in the political process.

WE BELIEVE THAT ACCESSIBLE AND AFFORDABLE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH CARE IS A RIGHT

  • Health care, both physical and mental from birth to the end of life, should be considered a right and not a privilege. Therefore, the state should put its resources to work, ensuring that all people have affordable and accessible health care.

  • Medicaid must be expanded by the state. Medicare must never be privatized to the benefit of insurance and pharmaceutical companies.

  • Preventative care, including prenatal care, should be included in any health care program.

  • A strong, non-political government approach to public health should be taken to protect people of Wyoming and the United States.  This should include funding science-based research and finding treatments for anything that may threaten public health.

WE BELIEVE IN JUSTICE, SAFETY, AND EQUALITY IN THE WORKPLACE

  • We believe that workers’ rights should be defended, and that workers have a right to organize.

  • We support collective bargaining which has brought a productive workforce, with reasonable wages, insurance, healthcare, and safety to the workplace.

  • Our long-sought stability in the current and future workforce cannot be sacrificed in the name of outsourcing for increased profits.

  • Pensions earned by workers should be provided and protected for employees.

  • Equality in the workplace is important for all people regardless of their differences, including but not limited to, assigned sexes, genders, sexual orientations, gender identities, ages, races, ethnicities, disabilities, and religions.

  • We believe that workers should always be paid before executives in the event of bankruptcy--or other financial hardship--or other company turmoil.

  • We support national funding in response to emergencies and natural disasters.

WE BELIEVE IN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT THROUGH DIVERSITY, RESPONSIBLE GROWTH, AND MAINTAINING OUR QUALITY OF LIFE

  • Governor Ed Herschler coined the phrase “Growth on our Terms.” That principle still stands.

  • We support an increase in the minimum wage to close the gap between different segments of our society.

  • Our economy should be structured to enhance the lives of all people and not just the select few.

  • The state should continue and expand its efforts to diversify and grow the economy.

  • Responsible growth entails protecting our environment, while providing good jobs with benefits.

  • We believe in investing in Wyoming. Our state’s infrastructure and the needs of our communities should be funded adequately.

  • We believe that the state should not pick and choose what succeeds in our state. This includes allowing the market to move away from industries, then supplementing the shortfalls with new economic opportunities.

  • We believe access to cultural amenities enhances quality of life for Wyoming’s citizens.

  • We acknowledge that our economy is often cyclical with booms and busts. To that end, we encourage state-level tax reforms and economic diversification to insulate our state revenue streams.

WE BELIEVE IN COMPREHENSIVE AND EFFECTIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM

  • We oppose local, state, or national statutes, policies, or actions depriving immigrants of their health, safety, and well-being.

  • We believe in responsible and reasonable border security.

  • We believe in providing an easier path to citizenship and protection of DACA recipients.

  • We wholly oppose the detention of undocumented immigrants, especially in institutions run by private contractors.

WE BELIEVE IN THE PRINCIPLE OF “PUBLIC LANDS IN PUBLIC HANDS”

  • We believe Wyoming’s public land heritage is one of our greatest assets.  Public lands should remain public and available for multiple use.  Wilderness areas should be identified and preserved, in adherence to the Wyoming constitution.

  • We call on all people, responsible agencies, and policy makers at all levels to uphold the principle of “Public Lands in Public Hands” while protecting public access to those lands for present and future generations.

  • We believe federally managed lands should not be transferred to the state.

  • Any new lands acquired by the state should be managed for the long-term benefit of the people, economy, environment, and wildlife. Multiple-Use should be a priority.

WE BELIEVE IN PROTECTING WYOMING’S WATER RIGHTS

  • We support keeping Green River Basin water in the Green River Basin.

  • We oppose water diversion projects that seek to move water across our state into Colorado or anywhere else, by any organization, be they private, public, a private-public partnership or anyone else who seeks to create such a project.

  • We believe in protecting Wyoming’s water for Wyoming's people within the law.

WE BELIEVE IN THE RIGHT OF CITIZENS TO SAFELY OWN, KEEP, AND BEAR FIREARMS

  • We affirm the right of citizens to safely own, keep, and bear firearms. Our Wyoming heritage shows that a responsible citizen’s right to bear arms must not be infringed.

WE BELIEVE CLEAN AIR, WATER, AND HEALTHY LANDSCAPES ARE ESSENTIAL TO OUR QUALITY OF LIFE

  • We support fair and even-handed enforcement of our state and federal environmental laws, to protect land, air, and water quality.

  • Wildlife habitat, recreational use of the lands, and open spaces must be protected.

  • We recognize global climate change as a priority and the need to move toward a sensible transition to renewable energy resources. This includes a climate change curriculum based upon established scientific principles in our education system.

  • We believe that providing quality jobs and protecting our unique environment are not mutually exclusive goals.

  • We believe that any development should be done responsibly with regard to our wildlife, their natural migration routes, and their critical habitat.

  • Reclamation should be assured at the company's expense and not at the expense of the people of Wyoming.

WE BELIEVE IN PROTECTING THE RIGHTS AND LIBERTIES OF ALL AMERICANS

  • We oppose any attempt to amend the constitutions of the United States and the State of Wyoming that would diminish the personal liberties guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.

  • We oppose laws and regulations which intrude on those rights which are guaranteed to us as free citizens of the republic.

  • Surveillance by the government of our private lives should be done only in the confines of constitutional law. Any intrusion authorized by the Patriot Act should be abolished.

  • We strongly disapprove of the use of torture in domestic or foreign affairs.

  • Our children must live in a safe environment and must be protected from human predators. We call on policymakers to strengthen laws against child abuse and exploitation and family violence where needed, and to enforce what laws exist.

  • We oppose the incarceration of anyone in facilities privately run by a for-profit entity.

WE BELIEVE IN EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL

  • We support the equal treatment of all residents and oppose discrimination of any kind including the unfair treatment of all incarcerated persons under the guidelines of current State and Federal Laws.

  • We support the separation of church and state and oppose government interference in our private lives.

  • We support a woman’s reproductive choices.

  • We support marriage equality for all.

  • We support legislation against hate crimes, which include, but are not limited to, assigned sexes, genders, sexual orientations, gender identities, ages, races, ethnicities, disabilities, and religions.

  • We believe in valuing all of our citizens regardless of their income level, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs or lack thereof, state or nation of origin, length of Wyoming residency, or any other factor that is used to drive Wyomingites apart rather than to pull us together.

WE BELIEVE IN A STRONG SOCIAL SECURITY SYSTEM

  • We strongly support strengthening the Social Security System. We will fight to keep the system from being placed in private hands, where the security that our parents and grandparents worked so hard to achieve is subject to the risk of being lost to those who had no part in providing that security.
